In addition to its railway operations, the Corporation is involved in a wide range of business activities in Hong Kong. The merged rail network comprises nine commuter railway lines, a Light Rail network and an Airport Express link, with an average weekday patronage of more than 5.5 million passengers. On 2 December 2007 the operations of the Government-owned rail operator, the Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation, were merged into the MTR, heralding a new era in Hong Kong railway development.
In June 2000 it was re-established as MTR Corporation Limited and in October 2000 was listed on the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong. The Corporation was established in 1975 with a mission to construct and operate an urban metro system for Hong Kong. Its railway forms the backbone of Hong Kong's extensive public transport network and delivers passengers to their destinations with a 99.9% on-time performance.
